Monday, May 13, 2019
Children’s author Sandra Markle recently visited with students at Liverpool Elementary, Long Branch Elementary, Soule Road Elementary and Willow Field Elementary to share the magic of books.
In addition to reading her book Shut Up and Hibernate, Markle conducted a number of science experiments using everyday items such as a hair dryer, plastic ping pong ball, tin cans, string, plates and a glass.
Markle is the author of more than 200 non-fiction books focused on animals and science. Her What If You Had series allows readers to imagine what life would be like if people had the same features as animals (such as an elephant truck or shark teeth).
Markle has won numerous awards, including the 2012 Prize for Excellence in Science Books by The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor Book, Cooperative Children’s Book Center Choices, NSTA Outstanding Science Tradebook, Green Earth Book Awards, Cybils Finalist, John Burroughs List of Nature Books for Young Readers, Junior Library Guild Selection, Orbis Pictus Recommended Book and Charlotte Zolotow Award.
